Here's the link to the the Transformers concept designs by Ben Procter. In my opinion, some initial Optimus head designs even looked better than the one used in the movie. See for yourself!

Optimus Prime, the fictional commander of the heroic Autobots is called "Convoy" in Japan, due to his leading a convoy of vehicles. He has become the most recognizable Transformer of the series.
